2009 (Demos for CTAFB)

Ocean :

This was the last song we wrote before heading into the studio to record CTAFB. I wasn’t really happy with my lyrics or some of my vocal line cause I rushed it a bit. Still a great song though! Just that my bit’s are a bit shit.
I love the hook in the chorus and the middle 8 is ace.

Against the Wall :

We started writing this song before recording YEWB. Consequently it was one of the first songs to be lined up for Curious Tales..
I think we wanted this to go on the record right up until the month before we recorded. But other songs got written and replaced this. Still a great tune.

Poised with Envy :

This song made it as far as pre-production but didn’t make the record (as did Ocean).

Fake It :

I still love this song!! Gutted it didn’t make it onto YEWB but hinesight is a wonderful thing. We’ve played it acoustic a few times. A clip of one of those times is on this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMTpiuZVsJY

Shivers and Silence :

Old Song! Written right at the start of the sessions for YEWB. We played it live a few times. We dumped it before pre-production for the record.

Before we get started though, just because it’s Easter (and Dan made me), here is a lovely piece of creative literature to raise the spirits, particularly those of the dead.

There were 4 gents from the ‘Burgh

Oh quite, the Bunny is a damn hoodlum!!

Yesterday (Day was pretty straightforward really, finished tracking all the guitars with the exception of an intro/outro for 1 song and Ali managed to wail his way through another tune with his Meat Loaf-esque vocal sound waves.

I finished yet another book during another ‘off the chain’ day which was just plain super, I believe there might even be a photo of me ‘in action’ during the completion of said book – it was a good book in case you were wondering.

When we got back to my folks’ house Tom Barnes, the guy with serious length, im sure you’ll remember, had sent over the rough images from our ‘shoot’ (im not gay) the other day – they were looking pretty awesome, although I kept my end of the deal regarding my resemblance to Skeletor whilst adding another element by looking like Skeletor after a late night (im that creative).

Today (Day 9) we left my folks’ house for the last time, avec Easter eggs from them; I got one from my Nan as well cause im incredibly awesome. Once we got to the studio, eggs and all, we kicked off with the aforementioned intro/outro to finally complete all of the guitar tracking, and im now sitting in the control room writing this whilst Ali gets his bonBonbonbon Jovi on all over his second track of the day – just one to go after this and we’ll be packing down, loading up and shitting off back to Edinburgh – yeah, that’s right, we go back tonight cause we’re just plain crazy.

Dave’s out in the corridor, where he belongs, sorting a couple of piano parts for the last song we’re tracking today as well – should be tidy.

Just need to say that our ‘special guest’ is an absolute delight to have in the studio, he’s really picked the pace up and I know for a fact that Romesh is learning by the second from this particular guest’s endless ‘fountain of knowledge’ – he’s a bloody star!!! – this may possibly be explained later on in the blog, but it could also just end up being incredibly confusing really.

That’s all really, the guys are looking forward to getting the ‘finished article’ back once its been mixed and such and that will be us for this particular record, on to artwork, touring, press etc next.

P.S. im definitely back with a vengeance. That is my decision.

Right, I’ve been tasked with writing the blog this time so I’m afraid it will be neither funny nor interesting, so ‘strap in’.

We rocked up to the studio on Wednesday morning a little later than normal, which was nice, cause Romesh was in rhythm heaven sorting the last of the bass tracking, only to discover that Rob had gone to town on a Riesen and cracked a tooth. This ‘misdemeanour’ led to a thoroughly exciting trip to the dentist, which was followed by an equally riveting trip to the hospital for Romesh following some bizarre eye problem he obtained overnight.

Once these trips had been completed and all was well once again, a suitable guitar tone was decided upon and Ali and Dan ‘went to work’.

Obviously I lent a hand again cause Ali wasn’t quite up to the task.

The guys got 1 song cleared up by the end of the day and as a ‘reward’ we all went off on a date, Rob & Romesh included, to a curry house and indulged ourselves as required.

Day 6

Back to normal today, in the studio all day tracking guitars and managed to finish off a further 2 songs (pretty much) by the end of the day which was good – its definitely starting to come together now so the boys are all pretty excited as a result.

Thats all you get for this day – nothing more, nothing less (only love).

Day 7

Early start today as we had a photo shoot in Cardiff at 7:30 this morning with Tom Barnes who has some serious length about him. The early start was entirely my fault cause I rinsed it last Sunday with my SARS when the shoot was originally scheduled for and the guys were nice enough to give me as much time as possible to try and recover before a camera was stuck in my face – I still look like Skeletor though.

We covered a couple of aspects in the photo shoot, both of which went well, and everyone seemed pretty stoked with the results so we will see how everything turns out when the initial copies get sent over to us tomorrow.

Despite this significant addition to our day we still made it to the studio to continue tracking. Finished the rhythm tracks for another song, and Ali has banged out, and finished, some vocals to a track as well so it’s all plodding along pretty nicely.

That’s pretty much it as things stand just now, I just bought a book from ASDA as Ive read all the ones I brought down – my time here is incredibly exciting just now cause ive sewn all my stuff up already but ill hunker down and get ‘book happy’ I reckon.

Mykee

It was all about drum world yesterday.

Mykee’s feeling a lot better.
He finished the bits and pieces he had left this morning and is giving dave a hand just now with getting the bass down.

Dan took some ambient photos and trumped lots cause there is no bog roll at the studio.

I’ve pretty much done nothing all day.

More bass and fingers crossed, some guitars and vocals tomorrow – there’s only so much rhythm section a guy can take.

Going awesome though. :]

So it’s off to the Harbour, for some lovely refreshing ice cream!

Shortly after the last cone was finished, the boys took it upon themselves to delve into the local culture and embrace the ways of the dragon…

Here are a few of our most coveted findings!

Eventually, the ice-cream fuelled excitement withered and was overcast by an inevitable wave of fatigue. The TCAT boys crept back home and gradually sank into a deep slumber, recharging for what would soon be yet another action-packed day in the studio, with dear friends Romesh and Rob.
